Dr Lisa Burns’ 2009 doctoral research regarding the design of a physical youth sanctuary is grounded in the input of teens who spoke to what they needed. They were not helped, or felt they were harmed, in institutional settings. They requested a place designed to be a part of the surrounding landscape to bring nature and beauty into their healing, with plenty of windows and access to the outdoors, with opportunities to be in solitude safely or together with others. They requested a place apart from their home environment that was nourishing in every aspect, including beauty and function. A place where they could explore their gifts and interact safely with others in a therapeutic community model. Based in a natural, beautiful, safe environment, with access to wilderness trails, a flowing creek, creativity, and exercise, good food and fresh air, this Lodge and Retreat Center will offer options for short term stays as well as a place for education and seminars, speakers, trainings, meetings, and conferences that can be extended beyond our youth to others as well who are engaged in serving this population. Additionally, the Lodge and Retreat may be used when available as a respite location for clinical teams, foster and biological families, and high needs youth.
